Are Your Aligners Looking More Yellow Than Clear? Read This!

One of the biggest perks of clear aligner treatment is that the trays are clear, making them virtually undetectable. So, what happens if they start to turn yellow? The good news is that you can help prevent this from happening throughout your orthodontic treatment by learning about the causes of discolored trays as well as how to take care of them properly. We’re covering all of this information and more right here!

First, What Causes Clear Aligners to Discolor?

Typically, it boils down to not taking care of your trays properly. For example, if you drink coffee, soda, wine, and other dark-colored beverages while your aligners are on (even if it’s through a straw), stubborn stains can quickly surface. The same can happen if you don’t take proactive measures to keep them clean, like rinsing them thoroughly each time you take them out and consistently brushing them after each meal.

How To: Keep Your Clear Aligners Stain-Free

The good news is that there is no time like the present to adopt good habits that will benefit the health of your smile and the appearance of your aligners! Here are a few best practices we recommend implementing into your daily routine:

  • Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day.
  • Rinsing your aligners thoroughly each time you take them out of your mouth.
  • Storing your trays in a clean container (not a napkin) when you aren’t wearing them.
  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water to clean your aligners after each meal.
  • Not eating or drinking anything with your trays in.
  • Avoiding harsh cleaners, like bleach and mouthwash.

By adopting the above habits, you can prevent stubborn stains from surfacing on your aligners. That way, your trays (and your teeth!) look bright and beautiful throughout your entire teeth-straightening journey!
