Invisalign isn’t just one of the most popular orthodontic treatments; it’s an orthodontic treatment more than 17 million patients have used to pursue their dream smiles! If you are considering doing the same, but aren’t quite sure what to expect, you can read on for a breakdown of the Invisalign treatment process.
1. The Consultation
Starting from the very beginning, the first step is to schedule a consultation with an experienced orthodontist in your area. In addition to learning more about you and your smile goals at this appointment, your orthodontist will review your dental history and assess the severity of your case to determine if you’re a candidate for Invisalign. If you are, they will create your custom treatment plan, take detailed impressions of your teeth, and order your aligners!
2. The First Official Appointment
Once your aligners arrive at your orthodontist’s office, you’ll return so they can show you how to put them on, review when to take them off, and share what to do (and what not to do) to keep them clean and clear. They will also answer any questions you have at that time – whether it’s about how long to wear your aligners each day or how to store the aligners properly when you aren’t wearing them. Then, they will send you on your way with your first several sets of trays!
3. The Progress Visits
Every 1-2 weeks, you’ll move onto the next set of aligners in the series, bringing your teeth a step closer to their properly aligned positions. Then, every 6 weeks or so, you’ll visit your orthodontist so they can take updated impressions and see if your teeth are moving as anticipated. If that’s not the case, they can adjust your treatment plan to help prevent significant delays. They may also ask you to make a few tweaks to your daily routine, like using the chewies each time you put your aligners back on.
4. The Final Appointment
After you’ve worn all your trays and achieved the result you were looking for, your orthodontist will take the “after” photos as well as impressions of your teeth so a retainer can be made. While the lab artisans work on it, you’ll need to wear your final aligner to ensure your teeth don’t move out of position. As soon as it’s ready, you’ll have your last appointment, which is when your orthodontist will provide you with instructions on how often to wear it and when to take care of it.
