The Orthodontics Civil War: Metal Braces vs Clear Aligners

Over the past twenty years or so, there has been a bit of a revolution in orthodontics. Previously, patients interested in a straighter smile had one option: metal braces. However, in recent years clear aligners have become incredibly popular, allowing patients to achieve the grin of their dreams without the need for wires and brackets.

If you’re looking to align your smile, picking between these two is an important decision you have to make. Here’s what you should know in order to make that choice easier.

How do Metal Braces Work?

Odds are that you’ve probably known someone with braces at some point in your life. However, you still might not exactly know how they work.

While understanding braces completely requires years of specialized training, on a basic level they work like this: brackets are attached to the teeth with dental adhesive and are connected together via a thin wire. Over the course of a year or two this wire is gradually tightened, causing the teeth to move into their proper position. This innovative treatment method can deal with all kinds of serious misalignment issues, from crooked teeth to bite problems.

What About Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are a series of progressively tighter plastic trays that are worn over the teeth, gradually nudging them into place. Their sleek, simple design makes them an incredibly convenient alternative for those patients who aren’t thrilled about everything that wearing traditional braces will entail.  These trays are nearly invisible and can be taken off at any time for easy cleaning. That said, its worth noting that clear aligners only work on your teeth while you’re wearing them, meaning that you should aim to keep them on for at least 20-22 hours a day.

Which is Best for Me?

Clear aligners are usually considered to be the more convenient option of the two. They offer a lot in terms of aesthetics when compared to metal braces, making them popular among those who are conscientious about their appearance. You can also remove them before meals, meaning that you can avoid many of the dietary restrictions associated with metal braces.

Clear aligners are excellent at dealing with mild-to-moderate misalignment, but in the case of more severe issues (heavily rotated teeth, serious bite issues, etc.) traditional braces may be the only thing that can help. The best way to figure out which option is best for you is to talk to a professional. They’ll be able to consider the particulars of your situation and give you informed advice.
