Children trick-or-treating

Now that the spooky season is nearly here, that means all sorts of exciting activities. They include carving pumpkins, putting together fun costumes, and eating tons of candy! However, there is a downside to Halloween time, and that is tooth decay. Too much sugar consumption can lead to a mouthful of cavities. Here are some tips to help your child enjoy everything that comes along this time of year without needing to spend extra time in the dental chair.

Choose Candy Carefully

For Halloween candy, some sweets are more harmful than others. It is important to choose candy carefully so your child’s smile doesn’t end up experiencing the negative consequences. Consider how long each candy spends in your child’s mouth. For instance, sucking on hard candies for several minutes is more harmful than chocolate that will wash away in a matter of minutes.

Have a Plan for Candy

Even though it is temping to keep a candy stash around, it will be incredibly difficult for your kids to resist. Have each member of your family choose a few of their favorites. For the rest, you have several options. Either store it someplace out of reach for a later date or donate it. You could even come up with a plan to have your kids trade in their candy for a sugarless treat.

Encourage Excellent Oral Hygiene

Remind your family to brush twice and floss at least once every day. Always pick up a fluoridated toothpaste and replace brushes every three months or when the bristles begin to fray. If your kids aren’t already on track for regular cleanings and checkups, there is no better time to get started!

Staying Hydrated

Hydration is crucial for nearly every part of the body to function properly. If your kids aren’t drinking enough water, they won’t be able to produce enough saliva to maintain a healthy smile. Saliva helps to wash away food particles and neutralize harmful acids.

Timing Candy Consumption

If your child is going to enjoy a sugary treat, it’s best for them to have it during or directly after a meal. This is when their saliva production increase and helps to neutralize the harmful effects of sugar in the mouth.

Your kids don’t need to give up all their candy to keep their smile healthy, but it is important to take some precautions. This way they can enjoy the spooky season without a mouthful of cavities.
